Raised in the Amazon rainforest, the acai berry is jam-packed with every antioxidant, vitamin, mineral, and amino acid you've ever wanted out of a tasty fruit. With health benefits ranging from anti-ageing to weight loss, it's no wonder they call it a superfruit.
I first tried this wonderful berry prepared in a bowl concoction after a rejuvenating yoga class on the sandy shores of San Diego. The mild yet fresh taste of the acai berry was so sweet and refreshing while the entire meal left me feeling satisfied for hours after. After the experience I was left wondering why I hadn't encountered this healthy fare in any of the juice shops in Philadelphia. To my dismay, the growing trend of the superfood smoothie bowls hadn't reached the same magnitude in the Atlantic states quite yet. I looked high and low but I couldn't seem to find my newest addiction in any of the local restaurants of my city. On a mission to make the acai bowl part of my healthy eating routine I discovered it was actually very easy to make at home. With the help of my trusty blender and the always impressive produce of Whole Foods, the acai bowl has officially found a permanent place on my weekly menu. Whether it's Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner, I love that my cravings for this delicious treat can always be satisfied guilt-free.
There are so many different variations you can make by adding different types of fruit, but this is my favorite right now as the scorching summer months are still in full swing:
1 Pack Acai Berry Puree ( the Sambazon brand is available at most health food stores)
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen berry medley
1/3 cup almond milk
1 cup ice
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 banana sliced
2 large strawberries sliced
1/4 cup blueberries
1/4 cup of your favorite granola
2 tablespoons unsweetened coconut shavings
1 tablespoon honey
Place all of the ingredients for the smoothie bowl part in a blender and mix until it creates a thick ice-cream-like texture. If the smoothie is too liquidy, add more ice and blend again.
Spoon the smoothie mixutre into a bowl and top with fruit and granola. Sprinkle with coconut and drizzle with honey to finish. Feel free to get creative with the beautiful placement of your toppings.
